PRESS RELEASE
Meeting Held Regarding Independent Review and Kahnawake Combined Schools Committee Suspension
Kahnawake Education Center – Kahnawake, Quebec (May 16, 2012) –The Kahnawake Combined Schools Committee (KCSC) would like the community to be aware that the meeting held at Karonhianonhnha School on May 15, 2012 was NOT a DULY convened meeting as per the Kahnawake Combined Schools Committee Constitution.
In order to have such a meeting, the parents would have to be notified 30 days prior to the meeting with a clear explanation of what the issues are (to be discussed) and advertised locally as such.
The KCSC were aware of the meeting called by the school Principals, but believed it to be an update of the independent review only. The notice in the Eastern Door and notices sent home to parents implied that it was an update of the independent review and NOT to suspend the KCSC.
KCSC were never officially invited to attend this meeting, therefore not given an opportunity to answer questions regarding concerns that parents may have had.
Currently Sixty Six (66) parents voted for an independent review of the process and procedures used to evaluate the Director of Education. The KCSC will honor and continue to uphold the duties and responsibilities as appointed by parent reps and will provide updates as they become available.
There will be a press conference held at the Kahnawake Education Center at 3:00 p.m. today to answer any questions related to this matter.

“On Tuesday, May 8, 2012, as mandated by the parents who participated in a vote regarding an independent inquiry on the process and procedures used in the appraisal of the former Director of Education, a follow up meeting was held.
Attending that meeting were members of the Kahnawake Combined Schools Committee and the Principals and Vice-Principals of Kahnawake Schools.
At this meeting, it was resolved that as all parties represented may be perceived to be in a conflict for one reason or another and that an independent Selector must be secured to facilitate the selection of an Independent Reviewer. Specifically, the Selector would facilitate the writing of a terms of reference, which would include components to be included and excluded within the review; as well, recommendations on selection as well as budgets.
The Principals and KCSC agreed to meet again shortly once the background work has been completed.
Nia:wen,
Treena Delisle,
Chairperson, KCSC”

The Tim Horton Children’s Foundation and local Kahnawake Tim Horton proprietor, Bart Goodleaf reached out to the two Kahnawake Education Center elementary schools, Kateri and Karonhianonhnha in order to offer our children an enjoyable fun filled camp experience. The Foundation was established by Tim Horton co-founder Ron Joyce who loved children and wanted to give back to the community.
On Friday, April 27th, 40 elementary children from grades 4 – 6 along with staff from Kateri and Karonhianonhnha Schools were transported to Camp des Voyageurs Tim Horton in Quyon, QC which is approximately 3 hours north- west of Montreal.
Students spent two nights and three days participating in activities such as rock climbing, archery, nature exploration, arts and crafts, computer activities, campfires, and so forth. Special emphasis was also put on teamwork, responsibilities, as well as setting personal goals.
It is evident that when viewing the photos from this event, fun was had by all. A special nia:wen kowa goes out to all staff who participated in this event and special mention must be made to Kateri School’s Administrative Assistant, Tami Jo Rice who maintained communication with the foundation for organization purposes.
Our children were very respectful and future visits periodically throughout the school year are being encouraged by the Foundation for Kahnawake children.
For more information about the camp, visit Camp des Voyageurs Tim Horton.
