The Kahnawa:ke Education Center (KEC) was established in 1980 to administer all locally controlled educational programs and services previously administered by the Federal Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and the Mohawks of Kahnawa:ke Council.
The Center assumed complete control over all education programs and services in 1988 when the administration of the Federal schools was transferred to the Kahnawa:ke Combined Schools Committee (KCSC) of parents.
The Center administers and operates three community schools: the Karonhianonhnha Tsi Ionterihwaienstahkhwa School, the Kateri Tekakwitha School, and the Kahnawa:ke Survival School. The Center also administers all programs and services for students attending elementary schools, secondary schools and special institutions in the greater Montreal area as well as all students attending post-secondary institutions in Canada and the United States.
The Center is administered and supervised by the Director of Education along with a professional staff who are responsible for student services, curriculum supervision, student assessment and records, professional development, placement and counseling services, school administration supervision, computer technology services, and finances. The Mohawks of Kahnawa:ke Council administers the school transportation program.
The Center is located in the East wing of Kateri Tekakwitha School.
